lab_renstrom_team_mn_restorative_crowns_bridge_labsRecently this summer Renstrom Dental Studio was selected for the 2012 Best of Saint Paul Award in the Dental Laboratories category by the Saint Paul Award Program.

Each year, the Saint Paul Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category.

These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Saint Paul area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2012 Saint Paul Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners, including Renstrom, are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Saint Paul Award Program and data provided by third parties.

About Saint Paul Award Program The Saint Paul Award Program is an annual awards program honoring the achievements and accomplishments of local businesses throughout the Saint Paul area. MN Lab, Renstrom Dental Studio's: The Benefits of Photography

Renstrom Dental Lab's Radiant Restorations - Spring 2012 Newsletter
Many of the doctors I consult with say that they would like to make dental photography an integral part of their dental practice, but many don’t have a dental camera, and many who do have one are using it only sporadically, if at all.

It's amazing to me that dental practices are investing tens or even hundreds of thousands on new dental technologies while ignoring the single most important practice building technology available, the dental camera.

The photo (side panel) was taken by Dr. Benson and submitted to The Journal of Dental Technology's annual photo Contest. It was one of the select few photos to be printed in the February 2012 Issue.

Digital technology has simplified dental photography to the point that even inexperienced photographers can take excellent dental photos.

Gone are the days of complex camera settings and waiting for the photos to return from the lab while wondering if the photos will even be of acceptable quality.

Today's dental camera systems make dental photography easy, and the benefits to the modern restorative practice are impossible to overestimate. Here are some of the benefits:

Patient Communication

Your patients are constantly bombarded by clever ads promoting the benefits of products and services which compete directly with your treatment recommendations for the discretionary spending of your patients. It's no accident that the most successful ads are highly visual.

Today's consumer responds enthusiastically to vivid images that show how their life would be better with a particular product or service.

This response is emotional, not rational...a want, not a need. We need be aware of this as we present our treatment plans to our patients. Too often we focus solely on the technical details of treatment while providing the patient with little or no visual information about their problem and the benefits of our recommended treatment.

Most patients need to see their problem in order to "own" it, and see the benefit in order to "want" it. Dental photography is the perfect solution. Many highly successful restorative dentists use pre-op photos to engage the patient in co-diagnosis of treatment needs and follow up with before and after photos of similar cases to allow patients to imagine the benefits of the proposed treatment in their own mouths.

Laboratory Communication

Imagine, for a moment, a laboratory technician attempting to create beautiful and functional smile for your patient. Without photos, the technician never sees the patient, doesn't know where the facial midline is, doesn't know the smile line, skin color, lip support, incisal translucency, etc.

No amount of written instruction on the prescription could possibly communicate this information as well as photos could.

With just a few simple photos you can easily communicate all this information to the technician, greatly improving the function and esthetics of your treatment while reducing stress levels for both youand your technician.

Insurance Communication and Legal Documentation Dental photographs can be very helpful to communicate information about a patien's dental condition which x-rays can't. Cracks, leakage, bad margins, occlusal wear and cervical abrasion/abfraction are just some of the condi- tions that are best documented with photos.

For the same reasons, photos are of great value in showing the patient's pre-treatment condition should a complaint or malpractice suit be filed.

If you are interested making photography an integral part of your practice, I'd love to help you get started in dental photography or simply improve your existing skills.

Talking Value: Dental Coaching, Consulting, Marketing, Advertising...

Consistent, connective dentistry communication can improve how consumers understand your brand. Whether it is a downturn or a boom, targeted visual, written, or verbal presentations of your value will raise the priority status for your services or products.

People sit on their hands in a tough economy until value has been redefined for them. They have become wary, which slows their reaction time to marketing messages. Refocus them on the complete dental health and confidence building value you offer.

As a dental coach and consultant for practices who focus on oral health and aesthetic smile makeovers, I avoid putting the emphasis on cost (even if some pricing element is somewhere in the design or message). This is because devaluing professional services leaves little room to promote the higher level elements, which are the life blood of many dental practices.

Using the right photo with a synergistic message can effectively refocus the consumer on value without creating conflicts with costs. Since most of us have a lot less money (on paper and otherwise) than we did 18 months ago, a lower price - especially with higher level treatments like dental implants - would make very little difference in most cases.

For restorative and cosmetic dentists in this environment, value trumps price.

Sincerely,
Dick Chwalek

Service Versus Price: A Dental Perspective

Ever go into a big box store and look around for a service person to help you, and then after having no luck in this endeavor, send out a search party (on Sahara-tested camels) to find one? While this is barely an exaggeration, it shows what happens when you let price and volume take over from service and quality.

Obviously, there are some big boxes that do a better job than others, but as the old adage goes - there is only so much milk you can put in a gallon jug. Dental marketing is no different. Actually, most dentists know this is true for their delivery of dental care as well. Every dental practice has a level of service, which determines what their dental patients can access.

A simple way to express these limitations is the days and hours a dentist practices or how long or short consultations with the dentist are. Lowering prices at some point means reduced service capabilities no matter how long the practice is open or how much the patient sees their dentist. The limitations might come in how nice the environment is, what technology is available, what kind of dental lab they use or how well the dentist is trained.

My business also has certain limitations. However, few are related to service. While I can try to get the lowest priced vendor for the dental marketing I do for my dentist clients, to offer prices low enough to standout I would need to flat line my service strategy, creating a very rigid structure.

The rigidity of the low price dental marketer is centered around flexibility (lack of it). Unless you purchase exactly what the low priced marketer offers - with maybe a few minor customized elements - the marketer cannot provide the service (at anywhere near the price advertised). Let alone help you (the dentist) with a tangential dental marketing need.

Dentists who are looking for one marketing product, want the lowest price, and have no need for advice can use these services to meet some goals. However, many dentists want to navigate many marketing concepts and challenges at one time and will struggle to meet any longtime goals using these limited groups.

The biggest reason these groups fail dentists is because they perceive dentists as the same: "Our concept works for all dentists." That is like saying one form of TMJ treatment works for everyone. After the meds wear off, the pain will be back.

Unfortunately, these limited groups often do not get dentists the right "therapy" for many reasons including...
  • There is already heavy competition using the same (often generic) method in the dentist's area
  • The method while "cool" and having gains in other industries, is not as valid for dentistry
  • There are not enough "ready" dental patients viewing/listening to/or receiving that media
There is already one way to get all the dental patients you need: The Yellow Pages! Before your local rep sells you that bridge, we should talk.
