1ST Installment: To See More Patients Consistently – Imagine Dentistry Differently

The following dental marketing blog/article is formatted & written in a style that may challenge readers who are partial to concise and self contained concepts.
Why?
The point I am making requires a discerning rethinking of communication in reference to dentistry. Unpacking the dental care prioritization riddle is NOT found in “Secret” Dental Marketing Reports!
And, why would anyone hide a solution from dentists, which would help improve dental health in their community?

Developing a system to compensate for the ‘reality of where consumers/patients and dentists’ are required deep research, analysis of actual results, long term perspective (years) and finally, a societally reflective reality check.
This was done to determine how all past/current marketing tactics and communication approaches influence dentists and consumers: positively and negatively.
Using the researched data developed, I created a system that does not, like too much of the dentistry focused marketing, ‘paint over’ what was/is and will be ‘wrong’ with the communication environment.
Unless ‘ALL the real issues’ are confronted and the system/solution is fully developed - not slapped together - the dearth of benefits from dental marketing will continue to lag (harming public, economic and office health) whether we are in tough economic times or not. (SeniorJournal.com)

Skimming the shiny objects from the marketing goodie tray is a symptom – but also a major contributor to the flat lining or worse of dentistry acceptance and value prioritization. While ‘good skimming’ will show results – it merely masks the problems underneath: value stays low or does little to move consumers forward.
Like flossing and brushing can only do so much if someone is more ‘predisposed’ to periodontal disease than the above average person, marketing done slapdash that moves one step ahead - will then move 99.5% back.
That said, to make this dentistry communication blog-article somewhat easier to consume I am going to present it in small portions--with a link to the full concept at the end of each section...

Let’s begin:
First, some...

Dental Word Association:

Skimp. Skimp. Skimp. Minimal. Minimal. Minimal. Cheaper. Cheaper. Cheaper.

Dentistry Priority Digression Questions:

Any other way to approach it? Can I hold off on...? I can't see paying that much!

Dentistry Reductionism Source Discovery:

Words & Questions Above: Who do these words and statements relate to:
  • = The Public & Patients Value Perspective of Dentistry
  • = Most Dentists View of/Approach to Marketing
HmmmNotice the similarity?
Whoa...! Correlation may just Equal Causation!
Theorem = Patients prioritize the value of dentistry as dentists do the value of communicating the priority to patients.

Connective Communication: The Introduction for Dentists

> A Primer By Dick Chwalek, NicheDental.com

The concept of Connective Communication© incorporates these elements: improvers, gatherers and creators. The communication structure is visualized with these elements: a Pie Chart, three color slices and the π symbol – image below.

This formula takes into account both simplicity and complexity in defining a path towards communication and marketing ongoing success, internally and publicly.

The ‘extra decimal’ elements in the Connective Communication© (Pi & 3.14+) formula refers to various marketing elements that are somewhat or totally anchorless. The intersection of the pie chart colors represents where communication interacts, often making each element much more powerful and effective.

These areas of marketing can be separated generally but never are they completely independent. When independent ‘value’ is purported – “Our dental marketing tactic/product/system works better” – dentists must flee as fast as clinically possible! Only working in one marketing area has short and long term consequences. This concept is relevant for both marketing to consumers and dentists purchasing marketing.

The interaction of these basic elements demonstrates how dentistry marketing is both simple and complex. However, often it is simplified in areas where it should NOT be and made complex in other situations to engender some level of superiority. These tactics make both dentists (customers of marketing) and dental consumers very susceptible to proceeding with ineffective and inappropriate solutions.

Some of the buyer beware statements to watch for are ‘guaranteed’ and ‘money back’ offers. This type of promotion does not always delegitimize the offer, but like any ‘advertising promise’ the restrictions are often the iceberg of complexity underneath.

Simplicity in this environment should be a watchword for the sticky wicket of complexity that hampers trust development. Because dental treatment is different than most other services (delay, denial, fear…) marketing of dentistry has to be even more above board to generate proper levels of trust.

There are some ‘generic’ advertising services and products that work in most situations. However, it has a short half life once competition increases and/or the economy/local environment changes. This is where the dentist and dental practices needs to employ customization and do more than merely add the ‘next best’ technology/marketing gimmick.

Many dentists want a simplified concept that is as close to ‘automated’ as possible so as not to deal with it in any ongoing manner (supposed save time, worry, headaches. etc). This is a major reason why Yellow Page advertising was very appealing for many years. One time a year the dentist develops an ad and then dental patients roll in for a year effortlessly.

The Internet made the concept of simplicity is even more attractive. Unfortunately, online services have many characteristics that create an unbalanced perspective about the potential of marketing. Because much of the activity and details are viewable and accessible 24/7 there is a belief generated that you can do it yourself and/or it can be nearly free to make lots of money.

But the reality of online marketing is more like the right side rearview mirror in a car: dental marketing is not a simple as it appears. The approaching traffic of marketing complexity collision is only hammered home after many thousands of dollars, hours and MIA new patients.

Getting in ‘at the right time’ can create success, but most of us get there just as the market is on its way down, obviously. Conversely, slow and steady only wins the race when there is a successful strategy in the driver’s seat.

Connective Communication© is a marketing formula that combines a simplified structure with the complex reality of a progressively implemented, comprehensive strategy.

Simplified in its basic elements, the complexity of Connective Communication© comes in the form of our brains reducing everything to simplicity, which requires a grueling learning curve reversal (aka: beating head against the wall) until we are going in the right direction.

Simply trying to ‘get in’ at the right time means running into the oncoming traffic of complexity as we drive the wrong way on the oneway street of reality. What Connective Communication© does is provide a platform based on the simple truths of marketing effectively blended with real life complexity that makes long term success possible.

Interested in knowing more? We should talk. If you are comfortable using Skype, a video consult gets things real. Either way, phone or Skype video… You will get more details.

Effective Dental Patient Scheduling: Part 3 of 3

This is Part 3 of 3: to Read the First Installment - click here.

Topics Covered in Part 3
  • The "In Between" Prospective Dental Patient
  • Dental Patient Communication Conclusion
The "In Between" Prospective Dental Patient
Your dental office is the pond and this caller is fishing without enough bait. They really don’t understand what Dr. Expert Dentist Of Dentistry does differently than every other cosmetic, restorative, or implant dentist, but they want to know more.

Problem is they would be initially shocked by this dentist’s fee structure and comprehensive treatment plans. The key here is guidance not necessarily scheduling them for a dental appointment or smile consultation. Yanking on their line too hard now could just get a hook in someone’s eye or send them to another dental practice’s pond.

Here is what your dental office front desk person should listen for…
• They might have seen Dr. Expert Dentist's ad, some reference or heard from someone about Dr. Expert Dentist, but little has been decided
• Insurance might come up, only because they think they need to mention it (phone answerer shouldn't bring it up)
• Want more info from Dr. Expert Dentist of Dentistry (don’t assume it’s an in-practice consult request – Dr. Expert Dentist email or phone call might work)
• Lots of questions (answer them – explain an initial consult to them – get comprehensive in conversation – etc.)

Dental Patient Communication Conclusion
By identifying the dental patient's preparedness, you are able to deliver right dose of communication so they are not overwhelmed with your treatment recommendations.

Make sure new patients are prepared to accept the level of dental care you present to them. Then prepare yourself to be THE cosmetic dentistry, dental implant, smile makeover expert and generate revenues to match!

Call to get your communication prepared for case acceptance success.

What is the best marketing for my dental practice?

I wish I could tell you what is the best type of dental marketing. Unfortunately it is a secret. Fortunately my ability to keep secrets is feeble.

The other dental advertising firms have a FREE report of SECRET MARKETING STRATEGIES that you to sign up for and then have to wait for the email. Then it turns into some kind of bait and switch and you realize there was no secret except the fact the secret was - there was no secret.

The difference with my dentist coaching and dental consulting services is that I give you the report upfront and all I ask is that after reading it you send me $1,000 or $10,000, whichever fits your budget.

I would prefer $10,000 since I just got the FREE REPORT on the SECRETS of LIVING TO 100 and after getting them, was persuaded to purchase their products that cost $9,000, which included healing magnets, super-sized supplements, ancient Chinese herbs and feng shui (fung shway) dung infused organic soil for my garden.

Then a few days later I talked to my doctor who did not have a free report - which made me wonder if he actually knew what he was doing (or how successful marketing worked). He says to me, "You can also live well by eating in moderation, drinking in moderation, exercising at least moderately, avoid sucking down a pint of nicotine with a shot of carcinogen each day, and brushing and flossing."

I thought - you tricky one - you logically and scientifically trained health professionals. What is this? I knew that already. Yes, I want a well trained engineer building my bridge and someone that actually knows materials science to build my iPod, but for my health, I want something that sounds like it came from the UFO that lands in my yard every night.

Health can't be something I know how to do - then I might be the problem. That means I need to actually do something. It should be something totally fascinating out of my control and nearly magical to be effective.

Sadly, Niche Dental is based on something different than fantasy. My bait is mostly about throwing the switch on of reality.

As humans, we want to believe there is something easier and simpler - because we need easier and simpler so we can do more of what we would rather be doing. Like your dental patients. They want their visits and treatment to be painless, costless, done in a minute or in no time, no further obligations, and last until they want it to.

The answer to this complex dilemma is simple: just COMMUNICATE in some new way that you are not doing now.

Should you do your dental marketing in a certain quality, complete, targeted, consistent way? Yes. Of course.

But what if there were TEN people who needed dentistry of -- any kind. And you got 7 of them to brush and floss regularly and get to a dental visit once every three years instead of -- never. Rather than losing all of their teeth by the time they hit 60 years of age - they make it to 67.5721 years or almost 67 years and 6 months? Would that have been better than only 60 years with teeth? Of course.

Therefore, you simply need to COMMUNICATE MORE! This will change the dynamic in some way for a few patients...

There you go. The SECRET of Dental Marketing Revealed RIGHT HERE!!! No obligation of any kind. No need for me to get your email and send you a lot of stuff that is so super secret that only the magician behind the Web curtain can make it appear. And for that, just send me $1,000 - I mean $10,000 and we are even... No questions. No lawyers. No harassing calls. 10 Large and I am good...

Now, about communicating/marketing in a quality, complete, targeted and consistent way. Obviously that level of communication commitment is better - you are able to get beyond the basics like the other 3 of the 10 patients above that we have not dealt with yet.

One of these three remaining patients in my example gets a dental implant supported denture, which that patient uses to build an empire - "I liked the dental implant gadget so much I bought the company!" You put that in a press release about your amazing dental expertise and become the talk of the town. Use this headline - no charge (after I get my 10 large). One dentist. One implant supported denture. One Mega Success. America - ya gotta love it!

The 2nd patient of the remaining three (or now remaining two - sorry this is confusing) gets ongoing periodontal treatment and avoids a heart attack (or a stroke) which the patient in this example would have had without you MARKETING TO THEM - because they did not know about the link between gum disease and DEATH!!!!

The last patient (or the third of the three or last of the one... No we will call her Patient Ten - because of HIPAA I can't say that the patient is Sally my neighbor - so don't ask...) also gets whitening, veneers, and other amazing dental treatments for the smile makeover you now can present to all your other patients and the public to show them what is possible today with advanced restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

But Dick what exactly do I do? Dental postcards? A practice brochure with my smile makeovers in it? A dental website for my office? Yes. Yes? But Dick I need more. Then I will add some weight to my list.

So you want to know why we gain weight? No, Dick I want to know about marketing and what to do.

Calories in - calories out. It is that simple. No Secret Dental Advertising Reports. No bait and switch - just the reality that you need to say more, say it in the best way you can - right now and then keep augmenting, enhancing and moving forward.

Stop sitting around in the living room sofas of indecision and consuming all the dental marketing mumbo jumbo calories. Work with my strategic partners (see below) and sign up for my coaching. Call or email one of us.

Dentist marketing coaching provides the right information at the right time as well as ongoing encouragement to make things happen in a shorter time span. If you want more proactive integration, ask about my dental communication consulting services.

If you want other options - I have heard of this Google thing, and this Yahoo is another, and there are many more. Search for the marketing partner you want to work with. But make a decision.

As you wait, teeth fall out, bleeding gums persist and strokes and heart attacks are removing qualified candidates from your potential patient list.

No dental patient wants to be "sold" something they don't need - but if they are missing what they need to know and don't know what is possible now to make it better - the bill of goods they end up with could be much worse.

DO NO HARM - dental marketing is very healthy for your patients and the viability of your dental practice.

What Will Happen To Dental Marketing in 2009?

The economy has changed in a dramatic way. Even if you had a good year, the ground has shifted and consumers will react. Dental practices that follow the crowd could end up heading off the cliff of generic malaise or getting little to drink at a very dry lake.

Recently, a client sent me a newsletter from a dentist who helps practices make decisions about their strategies. The consultant's idea was to start focusing on insurance patients and family dentistry. Basically, because money will be tight for consumers dentists should find ways to do dentistry that costs less. Sounds like a common sense business and dental marketing strategy in these tough economic times.

The problem is NOT that it won't work. It will work very well for many dentists. But what you need to consider is: are you 'many' dentists? Or look at it this way, would it make sense to tell all businesses to become Wal-mart when the economy goes down hill?

The dental practice management consultant also said that cosmetic dentistry as an overriding focus would be a problematic strategy in this environment. While I agree, cosmetic dentistry has never really made huge inroads - staying around 3-5 percent of overall dental treatments in the U.S.

Unfortunately, dentistry as a service has hardly moved at all in its utilization by the public even with the exciting elements of cosmetic or aesthetic enhancement. From 1996 to 2004, there was no change in the percentage of consumers with a dental visit (SeniorJournal.com). This dental care statistic, while seemingly problematic especially in this economy, offers a good perspective in determining how to market YOUR practice (not every practice).

Things will change but not everything will change. Here are some realities you want to consider as you decide on what direction your dental marketing and business strategy will go in 2009...

First, the consumer is still stuck in a rut of dentistry tradition and dental fears. Their needs and wants are often conflicted because of this dilemma. While it can be frustrating for dental professionals who want improve public health, it shows how the economy has little to do with when they will go to the dentist. When they have significant dental problems, the economy has almost no impact on them. Historical memory, human emotion and dental pain are recession proof.

Second, the general consumer thinks about health when dentistry is brought up. Everything else is sidelined in some way. Cosmetic dentistry is marketing icing. No matter how ugly your smile is dental fears are not removed. The nice smile on your advertisement gets people to look and consider dentistry more so than a diagrammed root canal. Yet one look does not equal a dental visit. Your dental marketing needs to have reality infused in it so it does not look too unfamiliar. Most everyone would like a beautiful smile - just like most would like to have a hard body. But getting it done is another matter.

Finally, the money is out there, just look at the numbers. Even if the employment goes as high as 11% (what most see as the high end) there are still 89% who will still have a job. While there will be areas that get hit very hard, overall there are people who will find the money to get it done. Those who have a lot less - will probably just hold off unless everything is paid, and go to the real Wal-mart--not practices that resemble them.

That means you won't make it up on those who rely solely on insurance or the family dentistry group with a big dental treatment plan or a couple crowns because more of them will just sit on their hands. And think about it, who is hit harder in this economy, those with kids or those without? People without kids have the money to spend, and will do it if the value is evident.

Conclusion
What would you do with extra money right now? Buy and flip some houses? Pile it into the stock market? Open a restaurant? Buy a new car? It might be 12 months to 5 years before at least some of these things seem more palatable.

Yet, if you had money - like most people 45 and older who are in the upper 25% of incomes and household wealth - and your teeth were falling out, oral pain was a daily issue or your smile was yellow and worn - would you wait 12 months to stop the pain and the embarrassment?

You can follow the dentistry marketing herd towards the watering hole that is quickly drying up or run off the cliff with a generic dental practice strategy. Take your pick.

However, I suggest you survey the 'reality geography' more closely as it relates to the dentistry you want to do. Then find YOUR dentistry-plush savannah to graze in and avoid the fall into dwindling returns. Or dig a well to create YOUR dental care oasis

What exactly do you do to make it happen? That requires a phone call and a some reality time to make it work for you.

  •  Generic and magical-thinking dentists and dental practices apply elsewhere.
Remember just like all politics are local - every dental care decision is personal with a good dose of tradition - not about family, insurance or cost.
