Books or Potions That Solve All Medical/Dental Problems ... So They Say

minimally invasive dentistry cod fish oil potionBooks or Potions That Solve All Medical/Dental Problems (or Many Of Them In One Fell Swoop) So They Say

This post was originally a comment on Dr. Judene Smith's Facebook.

I agree that what we put in our mouths today "may" harm our teeth more than most other things dentists are doing to "help" them heal (fillings and such). If you've read about Native Americans of 300+ years ago, some of the tribes had very beautiful teeth, compared to many newly arrived Americans (exactly w

hy, I don't know, fermented cod liver oil???). But choosing one or the other (as this made it seem was the case) is not really the solution either.

First, there must be a point when fillings are required, which is where the dentist comes in, right?

Second, sending people to a book seems like a way to nip things in the bud, but being a voracious reader myself, I can see where this could be a problem. Like stopping people from going to a dentist in more significant numbers than already do. After reading three books on one subject, I am either confused, believing the last book I read is right or saying they are all idiots, and I need to read another book to find out the "real" answer. (An exaggeration, but as to science, medicine, economics, history and politics, reading in these subject areas can take me, and many others, in a similar direction.)

Third, criticizing fluoride is like telling people to quit going to the grocery for fruits and vegetables, and to grow it themselves, but only it's easier to drop it all (in this case, going to dentist and no fluoride) for a while, and then decide you only need to grow vegetables or do half the work (cod oil and no dentist ever). It also feeds into the hysteria (in some places) that fluoride isn't naturally occurring, unlike "fermented" cod liver oil. That hysteria reinforcement is an unfortunate side effect of this type of "I have the REAL solution" book.

Finally, I am suspicious of any book that goes against "everything" in the dental world, and tells people to "merely" take "ancient Chinese secret herbal green tea anabolic hemorrhoid supplements", and live as Henry David Thoreau did (and actually didn't for very long), etc. and shun anything we've learned in the last 150 years... While this is also an exaggeration of the book, in some or many ways, again the promotional language of Dr. Smith's book seems to suggest a "renouncing all ideology" to the casual observer at least. These casual observers and/or readers can end up being a large part of the adherents/converts, and of course, all those who they have influence over (family, friends, etc.), and so on...

Her book may have all the qualities suggested and implied be the promotional elements or noted inside the full text, but having not read all of Kevin Trudeau's books (beating cancer, diets, etc.), I think it still makes sense to be cautious when someone has all the easy answers to life's problem or an entire profession's problems, or again, seeming too at least:

Sincerely, Richard The Chwalek

I'm a communication consultant for dentists; I am not a dentist.

PS: It is not that many of Dr. Smith's claims may or may not be spot on, it's that the implementation of these ideas for health "refashioning" can be significantly more problematic than just stating an end to something and moving to another. Sadly, a book does not change societies - societies do, and the wild swings of this kind of idea in the marketplace, like the Slick medicine show huckster with the flask of cod liver Oily salvation, can harm many as well.

Video Part 2 of 2: Why Are New Dental Patients 'Available' In Your Area or Not...

The second video concludes my general discussion about New Dentistry Patient Availability. This concept refers to the stable or constant number of consumers who are searching for a dentist or dental offices.

The 'Availability' number does NOT change just because another dentist moves into the area.

The ‘Availability quotient’ is changeable but only with a disruption in the environment (like a dentist building a new office--that is obvious to the consumer) or an external communication intervention using activators such as dental marketing direct mail/postcards.

Activators are combined into the Connective Communication© formula, which involves combining layers of marketing required to activate a vibrant new patient base and sustain a high level of available participants.

Dentists develop a matrix of these activators: one 'gathers' the current available group, another 'creates' more new patients and, the third improves the value of what patients request/purchase.

Northern Dental Alliance Welcomes New Member

The NDA - based in Minnesota, recently welcomed their newest dental alliance member, Leanne M. Mathieu Kramer. Ms. Kramer has worked in the dental profession for over 20 years. She brings her expertise for infection control and OSHA compliance training as well as implementation of these elements for dentist offices in Minnesota.

Leanne saw a need among these dental practices after working in the clinical setting for many years. With so much focus on quality patient care, new products and technology, many dentists and dental offices find it difficult to keep up with written infection control, MSDS, and radiation manuals.

She started her dental consultant firm Statements Plus Compliance Solutions, Inc. to help dentists achieve their other goals more efficiently and effectively.

Leanne is authorized by the Department of Labor as an OSHA Outreach Trainer in General Industry. Her memberships include, The Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures, American Dental Assistants Association, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, and ChiroCode News.

What Minnesota Dentists Say About Leanne
"Leanne is the consummate professional. She has a thorough understanding of all OSHA policies and procedures. But more importantly, Leanne has a well-organized implementation plan that allows your dental office to be completely OSHA compliant. I would highly recommend Leanne and Statements Plus."
> Dentist in Bloomington, MN

"Let's be honest - no one enjoys OSHA, HIPAA or radiology lectures. Leanne makes it convenient and pain free. She is very organized. It's a great way for everyone to stay up to date and get CE. It also allows the doctors to focus their attention on other things."
> Pediatric Dentist - Coon Rapids, MN

"OSHA training needn't be a source of dread with you or among your staff. Get a professional to help! She will have both a diagnosis AND a prescription just for your dental practice. I offer a whole hearted endorsement of Leanne's services...she made the complex task a simpler one for us...all we needed to do is make one call. Thanks, Leanne!"
> Preventive Care, Restorative, Cosmetic Dentistry - St. Cloud, MN

The NDA encourages dentists to contact Leanne and make sure your practice is set up exactly how patients expect it already is - safe, secure, and health regulation compliant.
.
The Northern Dental Alliance graciously welcomes Leanne as a member. More importantly, her expertise and knowledge offers NDA's client-dentists a way to achieve even higher levels of success.

Laboratory & Dentist Collaboration creates Beautiful, Healthy Smile Makeovers

What do consumers want from dentistry? They want lasting results. Will they always want to pay for it? That depends on how it is presented and what the dentist is actually able to deliver.

The right dental laboratory is an important element in achieving the level of smile makeover results most consumers "really" want. While everyone wants to pay as little as possible, dental patients expect their dentistry to last. Going the other direction (lower quality to hit a price point) in too many cases just exacerbates the low value view they have about dentistry.

Of course, it is not easy to overcome the low value issue when they want to pay less because they don't believe that there is value in doing more. Obviously, if you suggest more than the dental insurance industry covers, you are "selling" them a bill of goods.

The insurance companies are only looking out for their policy holders--would never steer them in the wrong direction. A dentist who is trying to heal patients has to be the bad person when they do more than an insurance company. Four years of dental school, a residency, thousands of hours of continuing education and many years of experience are merely a ploy to oversell their patients on some crazy idea of comprehensive health.

The dental insurance provider that covers $1,000 per year in dental work -- which pays for one or two restorations - has to be thinking only about the patient's long-term health. Their altruism is rock solid and is based on the best interests of their patients. That is the only way to think about it, right?

Then again, if you think about how most of us (dental consumers) access dentistry, which is usually haphazardly or only at the point of complete dental deterioration (see your state's edentulous stats here) then you might see how the $1,000/year is actually very problematic.
Imagine going five years without seeing the dentist. You can't get your $5,000 back from the insurance company (if you even have insurance). Plus your dental health probably has declined significantly. That $1,000/year might have covered things if we as dental consumers used it each year. But now you probably need to double it to correct what you have done to your smile.

So you are now up to $10,000 or let's say just $7,500. Maybe it has been 10 years since you have visited the dentist. Then it might be 2.5 to 3 times what it cost if you would have been a model preventive care patient so $25,000 to $30,000. Now who is snookering whom in this situation: the assertive dentist who actually has the expertise or the patient in denial with their insurance company with their paltry $1,000 handout?
While the insurance provider has not done anything wrong contractually, not accepting the dentist's comprehensive smile makeover plan often gives the patient the impression that the dentist is over diagnosing. Basically, the insurance company is saying, "continue doing one-tooth-at-a-time dentistry like they did back in the 20th century". Use 21st century technology for the restoration - but the same treatment strategy from back when high tech meant having the latest version of the Craftsman pliers--dentist edition.

Yes, $10,000 is a lot of money, and paying your dentist $30,000 might even seem obscene to some. Then again it was all the rage to pay a huge sum for a Harley chopper, but for some reason having a healthy set of choppers is worth so much less.

Paying a car and bike salesman enough to live in a mansion is just fine. But a dentist that have a ton of debt before they even start their career, and does work most of us could not do (that actually makes people feel better in many ways) is looked at in a negative light for wanting to make you healthier and to make some money as they do it.

There might be a few Bernie Madoff dentists out there - but before you label every dentist in that vein - look in the mirror and see how well you can smile without one in your life.

When searching out a dentist that has your health in mind make sure they work with a dental laboratory that backs them up with a quality result.

Reality Dental Marketing Principles

These concepts are most valuable to dentists who have tried all the generic dental marketing strategies and products. Dentists with significant expertise that desire to develop a patient base who want and will pay for a higher level of results. Consumers who need re-constructive dentistry, dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, and smile makeovers.
  • Consistent and persistent communication is a large percentage of success
  • Creativity and uniqueness is necessary for differentiation and achieving a competitive advantage
  • Effectiveness will dissipate with competition, familiarity, economic conditions, societal changes, technology advances, etc.
  • Constant enhancement and refinement are required to overcome dissipation
  • Almost anything will work, if no other dentists (or very few) are marketing
  • Dental care has a history, which means the consumer has an attitude about it that makes it more challenging than other services and products
  • Helping consumers navigate around dental insurance reliance and dental phobias make the phone person key
  • Dentists need to be the BRAND not dental services or technology; otherwise patients will more often see recommendations merely as a starting point

Most Common Dental Marketing Questions?

What are the most common dental marketing questions? As a dental marketing coach and consultant working with many different dentists over the course of a year, I see many similarities with dentistry and marketing.

Dental patients also have many questions that my dentist clients need to answer. Some are more easily dealt with; others are more delicate or problematic. Dentists can often only answer in generalities. To dental patients, it might sound like avoidance, but usually it falls in the legitimate category of “we need to do a complete oral exam to make sure”.

Yet we all desire simple answers with an inexpensive cost to go with it. For my consumer cohorts and me, it is dental care. For you and my dentist clients, it is dental practice marketing. However, we also want to get a high level of value and realize that complexity and unknowns are part of life.

To build value and avoid causing mistrust, both of us – dentist and dental marketer – need to effectively enlighten each other’s constituencies. They need to know how to determine when value should take over from a pure cost perspective and when complexity requires us to do more than throw mud at the “solutions” wall.

Let’s see how these two perspectives, dental care and marketing, compare.

Frequently Asked Questions Comparison
--- Actual dentist provided the consumer questions for this TOP list.

1. Why doesn’t dental insurance cover more of my procedures? (I ask because because your expertise and my dental health is only valuable up to a point.)
1. How come your fees for dental marketing are higher than I was expecting to pay (and do not reflect the low value I put on this type of service)?

2. Is this dental treatment going to hurt in any way?
2. Can you guarantee that my first dental postcard mailing will work?

3. Is this dentistry procedure necessary?
3. Can I do less dental advertising and still get a good result?

4. My child needs braces. What do I need to do? (Asked before an exam)
4. I need to attract more dental patients. What do I need to do? (Asked without knowing your entire situation, real budget, etc.)

5. What age should my children start their dental care?
5. I have never marketed my dental practice at all or not very consistently or proactively; I have been opened for 2 months to 30 years. Where should I start?

6. Why do I need dental x-rays?
6. Why should I do a dental marketing plan?

7. Why do I need to come every six months to get my teeth cleaned?
7. Can I just do one direct mail dental postcard and then see what happens?

8. What is periodontal disease?
8. Why do I need consistent dental marketing to keep my practice healthy?

9. Am I a good candidate for Invisalign braces?
9. Should my dental practice just stick with the same old, same old (my dwindling referral network, etc.) and not try anything new since it could be risky?

Complexity/Value VS Simplicity/Cost
Dentistry is often complex. Yet consumers want simple answers. Your education and training, the professionals you employ, and the products and technology you use require significant financial resources – especially if you want to offer latest, greatest dental service.

And even though consumers "want" these new, amazing dental treatments, they often expect it to have very little impact (at least obvious) on their wallets. This large value and reality disconnect squeezes things quite a bit. Without assertive communication (dental marketing) the opening for success will stay very small and probably get smaller.

Dental marketing has its complexities as well. Yet almost anyone can do it, even dentists— without a state dental board and health officials requiring they do 75 hours of dental marketing CE each year. This – I can do it on my own if I want AND the reality of time needed, increased trial and error potential, and constant changes in dental marketing techniques – creates a value disconnect as well.

How many hours do dentists spend on their own marketing to "save money" but then their trial and error rate is double or triple that of a middle-of-the-road dental marketer? Yes it might cost more "out of pocket" to get the results you really want, but is that not what you tell your patients. I do have an idea of how we could make things better -- develop a dental marketing insurance plan. Think of the bureaucratic marketing bliss we could achieve. I will send you the appropriate forms as soon as they are available.

How Can We Solve This Dentistry Dilemma?

First, decide what is most important. Is it value or cost? Should we avoid complexity (and hope for simple answers when they are not there) or go beyond simplistic marketing of dentistry and be more creative in addressing the challenges?

Once you make your decision, start communicating it consistently: whatever “it” is. Dental marketing in a consistent way is 50-90% of success. Of course, “success” depends on your competition, what methods are employed, and the frequency. (That darn complexity again.)

Next, consider what your value is and what person or entity can best develop it throughout your communication system (you, someone you know, a dental marketer, dental consultant, etc.).

Finally, rather than following the herd – be creative so you standout consistently. Choosing the generic – often the cheaper but little standout value – dental marketer – means at some point you will be (or continue to be) thought of as any dentist – which means your value will be generic and only covered by dental insurance.

DENTAL FAQ #10
> Both of these are mine.

10. Is there a dentist near you that has extra training and knowledge like you do (from sources like LVI, AACD, Pankey, John Kois, Peter Dawson, AGD, and dental labs AND does smile makeovers, dental implants, neuromuscular dentistry, dental exams, crown and bridge dentistry, porcelain veneers, braces, and/or smile whitening) but charges less than you do and will achieve the same value and result as you do?

10. Is there any place I can get dental marketing cheaper – but will also put the same level of value into my message, image, dental website writing, dentist brochure, cosmetic dentistry postcards, dental practice logos, dental PPC online advertising, dentistry stationery, and dental websites SEO?

> I like building value because simplicity is boring and contributes to the dumbing down to the lowest common denominator of what is possible. More importantly, your patients deserve all dentistry has to offer. When you are ready to get them that level of care, we should talk.

Dental Advertising: Consistency Rules the Day!

Whatever you think of dental marketing, it has a value to the consumer. It reminds, cajoles, influences, and encourages them to do what they need to do, want to do, and would make them happier.

Being consistent means you get to the dental consumer when they are "ready to do something". While it is no longer true now -- remember the days when the car ads overpopulated the newspaper? Why do they need to market that much anyway? Most of us would think. Then 18 months later when you were in need of a new car - there was not enough of them.

Cars and dentistry are different, but consumers are always the same. They need it when they need it and not any sooner - so dental marketing has to be consistent. Your dental practice always needs to be out there and top of the mind when they start looking.

However, there is subset of this dental consumer group that will put things off until someone reminds them or informs them of some new value provided. "I won't buy a new car till they get 100 mpg!" "I would get a smile makeover if they could do it without causing me pain!"

Unfortunately, once this "new value" is discovered and publicly marketed a few times - if at all - most dental consumers never hear about it again. Like now everyone who will ever buy a car has one!

Be consistent about your dental marketing and you will be successful! Of course, I believe my strategies work better then other dental marketers and also add long term value to your dental brand - but however you do it - do it!

Sincerely,

Dick Chwalek - Dental Marketing Consultant
